Sony’s DADC Digital Services group has unveiled a virtual camera that “captures” scenes from the PS3’s PlayStation Home virtual environment and then share them on YouTube. The LOOT Active Camera works in conjunction with Sony’s CrossMediaBar (XMB) Video Editor & Uploader to “record,” edit virtual scenes, and then upload them to social networking sites.

Sony’s PlayStation Home is a free social service for the PS3 where players create an avatar and then wander a virtual world. Sony relaunched the site in August, trying to make it more attractive and interactive, moving the opening scene from a Central Plaza to a new Hub, which serves as a launch point for games and quests. The LOOT Active Camera can be used to track, record and share these adventures. Previously, video capture could only be done with external PC capture and recording gear. Now, that task is performed by the PS3 itself.

The LOOT Active Camera app is available today from the LOOT store on PlayStation Home. Pricing has not been detailed outside of the app.
