Apple’s iPad is the best tablet on the market in terms of consumer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power and Associates’ new 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study. The survey looked at the opinions of 1,857 tablet owners who’ve had their devices for less than a year, and Apple’s bestselling tablets came out on top for the second time in a row. Apple devices hold the top spots in J.D. Power rankings for both tablets and smartphones.

The iPad narrowly edged out the Kindle Fire in terms of customer satisfaction, scoring 836 out of a possible 1,000 to the Amazon tablet’s 829. Both manufacturers were above the industry average of 822 in satisfaction. Samsung, Asus, and Acer rounded out the top five with respective scores of 822, 818, and 784.

The J.D. Power study looked at five indicators of satisfaction. Performance was the most important, followed by ease of operation, styling and design, features, and cost.

Apple’s iPad also scored top honors among J.D. Power’s Circle Ratings, netting an industry-best rating of five. No other manufacturer scored above three.

The study also looked at tablet owner behavior, finding that tablet owners who share their devices with others are significantly more satisfied with their purchases. Tablet owners also tend to use their devices much more for surfing the Internet than they do their smartphones.
