The NBCUniversal-owned cable network USA Network has renewed cartel drama Queen of the South for a third season. It will return in 2018.

Co-produced by Universal Cable Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios, the Alice Braga vehicle ranks as Thursday’s top cable series among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic when factoring in three days of DVR. The series averages 2 million total viewers this season.

Showrunner Natalie Chaidez, who replaced Scott Rosenbaum this season, will be back. She exec produces alongside David T. Friendly and Pancho Mansfield.

Queen of the South, which has previously been adapted at USA corporate sibling Telemundo, centers on Teresa Mendoza (Braga), who takes over after her drug-dealing boyfriend is murdered and seeks refuge in America as she plots her revenge. (The character is inspired by late drug lord Griselda Blanco, who will be played by Jennifer Lopez in an upcoming HBO movie.)

Queen of the South is part of USA’s push for darker and edgier dramas that consists of Mr. Robot, Colony, The Sinner and Shooter, the latter of which trimmed its season-two order after star Ryan Phillippe broke his leg. A renewal decision on Shooter has not yet been determined. Next up for the cabler are rookies Damnation and Unsolved.

The Queen of the South season finale airs Aug. 31 at 10 p.m.
