Twitter Reveals Mobile Stats at Event – 40% Q Over Q Growth

Twitter at an event in its San Francisco headquarters gave a rare look into its performance that showed just how vital mobile was to its business. About 55 percent of those who are active on Twitter, whether they post or just watch, are on mobile. Use was exploding on smartphones and other platforms: use was up 40 percent just between the most recent quarters, company chief Dick Costolo said.

For the future, the mini update service was undergoing a gradual change. The goal was both to simplify the interface as well as to make Twitter “more consistent” from device to device.

Twitter finally confirmed actual usage numbers and said it had over 100 million active users worldwide, half of which were online at least once a day. About 400 million unique visitors came to the website and suggested that many were getting value out of Twitter posts even if they weren’t compelled to sign in. Work was still underway to “tighten the feedback loops” so that users knew when they were being favorited or joined, and more content both between friends and worldwide had to be brought to the surface.

One of the greater tests of Twitter’s popularity is due to come within about a month, when Apple ships iOS 5. The service has had some extra integration on other platforms in the past but, on iPhones, iPods, and iPads, will be woven directly into the OS and developer access. Any app will just need to access a single Twitter sign on instead of asking users to sign on one app at a time. Any app will also have the option of sharing content through a Twitter post along with more conventional methods.
