The Third Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law Led Sherlock Holmes Will Tell A New Codependency Tale

The Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law-led Sherlock Holmes looks like it will be adding a third film to the series, nearly ten years after the last installment.

A week ago Downey teased he was getting ready to reprise his character based on the stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, saying in a tweet: “Practicing my Sherlock face”. Warners had previously set a Christmas Day 2020 release for the film which has Chris Brancato working on the script.

Law, doing an early interview for November’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald release, spoke with EW this week and revealed one little bit about the film’s story:

“We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine, since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them, we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”

The second film had Watson believing Holmes had fallen to his death off Reichenbach Falls, though later suspects Holmes may have survived when a package with a breathing apparatus shows up on his doorstep. Watson doesn’t see but we the audience saw Holmes is still very much alive and sitting in a camouflage suit in his office.

Law’s description suggests the film will incorporate elements of The Adventure of The Empty House in which Holmes returns years after his apparent death.

It’s still unclear if Guy Ritchie will be back to direct the project as he’s currently busy in the midst of post-production on Disney’s Aladdin.
