Sony Pictures and MRC’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga has topped the first weekend of the August box-office, albeit with a whimper.

Overcoming heinous reviews, the Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey-led fantasy feature is set to come in at a modest $19.5 million for the three days, topping the box-office. Dunkirk is a close second with $17.6 million in its third weekend.

Two other new films hit this week – the Halle Berry-led thriller “Kidnap, left adrift by the Relativity bankruptcy, has performed surprisingly well with a solid $10.2 million. Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit on the other hand looks to come in under expectation with $7.3 million despite rave reviews.

Sony’s Emoji Movie will take $12.35 million this weekend, down 50% from its debut, “Girls Trip” keeps going strong with $11.4 million, and Atomic Blonde has slipped to seventh with $8.2 million. In limited release, Taylor Sheridan’s “Wind River” looks to be scoring an impressive $41,042 per screen average.
