Even before director Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario hit theaters last year, it was revealed that plans were underway for a sequel. Now, Deadline has a major update, reporting that the followup, titled Soldado, will be helmed by Italian director Stefano Sollima (Gomorra, A.C.A.B.). As was previously revealed, Soldado will feature the return of Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro as Alejandro Gillick.

Sicario followed FBI agent Kate (Emily Blunt) and her conflicting journey that descended into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, Kate is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force who have enlisted her in their plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss.

Josh Brolin will be back as CIA Agent Matt Graver with Sicario and Sons of Anarchy scribe Taylor Sheridan also returning to script Soldado. Emily Blunt, however, is not expected to appear in the new film. She’s headed into a very different feature film as Walt Disney Pictures just this week confirmed that she’ll play the title role in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. Look for that one to hit the big screen December 25, 2018.

Soldado, which aims to begin production this fall, will be financed by both Black Label Media and Lionsgate. Returning producers include Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road Pictures and Molly Smith of Black Label as well as Edward L. McDonnell and Thad and Trent Luckinbill.
