Samsung Galaxy S II Officially Launch in US at AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile

Samsung launched its renewed offensive in the US as promised by unveiling the US versions of the Galaxy S II. The T-Mobile version promises to be the most unique and carries the larger 4.5-inch screen of the late 2011 update along with 42Mbps HSPA+ 3G, twice as fast as the international version we reviewed. It will keep the 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos chip and add a preloaded copy of Netflix along with carrier-specific extras.

Sprint’s version is the only one to get a name change and is now the Epic 4G Touch. Along with using WiMAX for its 4G, it too mates the 4.5-inch screen with the 1.2GHz processor. It too has carrier apps, including a special hotspot app, NASCAR, and Amazon’s Kindle reader.

The AT&T version is the most faithful to the original and uses 21Mbps HSPA+ along with the original 4.3-inch screen. Every version has an eight-megapixel rear camera, a two-megapixel front camera, and at least 16GB of storage.

AT&T and T-Mobile are vague about their prices, T-Mobile also did not disclose a release date other than the “coming weeks.” The phone reaches AT&T on September 18. Sprint, however, has already committed to releasing the Epic 4G Touch on September 16 for $200 on a contract.

The availability of the Galaxy S II in the US promises to be one of the biggest tests of Android’s appeal in the country relative to the iPhone. Unlike a year ago, when the Galaxy S didn’t have competition from Apple on any network besides AT&T’s, the S II this year will have to go up against at least Verizon iPhones and possibly a Sprint iPhone as well. Apple is expected to be virtually on par with Samsung in performance with a dual-core chip and an eight-megapixel camera of its own.

Verizon has bowed out of the Galaxy S II in favor of the Samsung-made Droid Prime, allegedly because it doesn’t believe the S II is competitive with Apple.
