chevy-siri-hands-eyes-free-630x420Chevrolet, the first automaker to bring Apple’s Siri Eyes-Free feature to market, has debuted a new TV commercial that showcases the feature as an integral selling point for the forthcoming 2014 Chevy Sonic. The Sonic, the second production model with the feature behind the Spark, has an integrated steering-wheel button that activates Siri to allow voice control of several functions of iOS devices without ever activating the screen or relying on visual feedback. Nine other automakers will also be bringing out models that feature Siri Eyes-Free.

The 30-second ad features the car being driven while the driver interacts with Siri, working seamlessly with Chevrolet’s own built-in MyLink entertainment and information system (which also works with other smartphone platforms, but with somewhat less functionality). Drivers can use MyLink to speak directly with Siri in order to control the iTunes library; listen to and reply to SMS and iMessage text messages; initiate hands-free calls to any contacts on the user’s device that have phone numbers, and interact with Calendar functions, including setting and being alerted to upcoming events.

In addition, users can access other Siri functions such as having it read aloud any notifications, hear and create reminders, access Apple Maps to get directions, and other normal Siri functions. Other carmakers that will be incorporating Siri Eyes-Free into some of their new models include Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.
