Motorola Atrix 4G About to Start Its Gingerbread Beta

Motorola’s Atrix 4G is on the verge of getting its long anticipated Android 2.3 upgrade. About 1,000 owners in the company’s Feedback Network are being invited to a “soak opportunity” that will let them try a beta version. Early adopters have until Monday at 10AM Eastern to take a survey to qualify, although Motorola hasn’t said when the update itself rolls out.

The Atrix 4G was released on AT&T roughly two months after Android 2.3 shipped but shipped with 2.2 out of the box. Although Motorola showed Android 2.3 running on its phones as early as the since-scrapped original Droid Bionic, it’s believed that development issues kept the OS from reaching phones until the summer. Trouble has been broad enough that Verizon is said to have halted all Motorola Android 2.3 updates on its own network until bugs were sorted out. The Droid X in particular is known to have suffered from lag, crashes, and other flaws after the Android 2.3 upgrade.

Motorola has never touched on the scheduling for the Atrix in particular but could have a public rollout for 2.3 in July if it can start the soak test this month without issues. The update may be limited to 2.3.3 and would miss out on official video chat, although a 2.3.4 follow-up may arrive as soon as September.
