Skype for Web

Microsoft has launched a beta of Skype for Web, a clientless version of its communications platform. Users can make video calls, send instant messages, and manage contacts via a browser; at the moment though, the beta is invitation-only for a small group of people. Microsoft says it plans to expand access globally “in the coming months.”

People can check their invitation status by logging into skype.com. Currently, Skype for Web also requires users to download a plugin, but Microsoft says it’s planning to do away with that, at least in Internet Explorer. Windows users must have IE 10, Chrome, or Firefox. On Macs, only Safari 6 or later is supported. Microsoft cautions that the beta has problems with battery consumption on Macs, and that outgoing calls can take longer to ring than in dedicated clients.
