Spider-Woman-coverThis year the Women of Marvel panel at Comic-Con played host to Marvel’s final Spider-Verse announcement of the weekend, with the news that writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Greg Land will oversee a new Spider-Woman ongoing series launching out of the Spider-Verse event in November.

This will be the fifth attempt at a Spider-Woman ongoing, and the third to star original canon Spider-Woman Jessica Drew. The previous volume lasted seven issues in 2009-2010 under Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Barring cancellations, the book will also be Marvel’s ninth ongoing series starring a female solo lead, following the recent announcements of new Thor and Angela ongoing series.

Spider-Woman will initially co-star the latest spider-woman (small ‘s’, small ‘w’) to join the Marvel universe, Silk, a character introduced during Original Sin as the other person who was bitten by a radioactive spider back when Peter Parker got his powers. All kinds of other spider-women may well make appearances given the Spider-Verse event’s multi-dimensional gallimaufry, as the first arc of the series is heavily tied to the events of Spider-Verse.

If you’re keeping track, Marvel’s nine ongoing series with female solo leads are Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, Elektra, She-Hulk, Storm, Thor, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, and Spider-Woman. We’re pretty sure that’s the most female solo books that Marvel has ever had running at one time. Three of those books have regular female writers or artists attached.
