LG Show FPR 3D Next-Gen Display

LG Display has unveiled its next-generation Film-type Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology to LCD manufacturers including Haier, Vizio and Toshiba. It argues that the current generation of Shutter Glasses (SG) 3D panels have problems with the weight of the shutter glasses, power consumption and reduced brightness. By contrast, LG Display’s new FPR technology has no flickering, produces minimal cross talk (the blurry ghosting image) and delivers a brighter screen. This allows for 3D glasses to be lighter, polarized and more curved like regular glasses.

This makes the viewing experience much more comfortable for extended viewing as the viewing experience reduces eyestrain. Additionally, the glasses can also be made much lighter than the relatively bulky glasses used on the current generation of 3D panels.

LG Display expects that the new technology will form the basis of all its immediate 3D display plans and expects a number of major manufactures to adopt its new technology. It will release a full lineup of 3D panels employing polarized glasses including a 1080p 47-inch LCD panel that will reach mass production soon. It also plans to release a 23-inch panel for monitors.

Also in the pipeline is an 84-inch Ultra High Definition 3840×2160 resolution 3D panel with a resolution four times higher than a standard 1920×1080 Full HD pane
