Ok, let’s face it, geeks can be hard to give gifts to, either you have no clue what to give or what they want is well beyond the gift budget.   Since I have been getting e-mails from people asking for for last minute ideas, I am going to share them with you.

This one is for those of you who want to give a gift that is useful, eco-friendly and easy on the wallet. The D-Link DGS-2205 router.   Even if you have a Wi-Fi network, there are times or places that having a wired connection is a better choice.

DGS-2205 is a 5-port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Switch which fits nicely in tights spaces and has a power adapter that does not block you from using the outlet next to it. This makes it perfect for using in an entertainment center where you might have an XBox 360, PS3, Wii, Blu-Ray players or even some TVs and other entertainment devices which need network access.

It is Eco-Friendly Too

You don’t use all of your devices that connect to the network at once.   After all you can not play your Xbox and your PS3 at the same time on the same TV.   So why should you own a router that keeps all of its ports on all the time and continues to consume full power when the devices connected to it are off.   Your shouldn’t!   It wastes money.   With D-Link Green Technology, D-Link switches can automatically detect link status and reduce power usage of ports that are idle.   Now there are limits to D-Link’s Green Tech, Computers or any other devices set to standby mode (not powered off) will not save power. Plus D-Link Green verified switches have the ability to analyze the length of any Ethernet cable connected to them for adjustment of power usage accordingly. Shorter lengths require less power.

Power of the Speed

Having good speed makes streaming movies from your PC to a media center device, transferring large graphics or other large files across the network much more enjoyable.

Easy to use
The auto features of this gigabit switch make installation plug and play and hassle-free. No configuring is required. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminates the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance.   in short, I have personally used one in a mix divorcement of different vendors network gear with hard that supports running at 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps without an issue.

The switch also features diagnostic LEDs which display status and activity, allowing you to quickly detect and correct problems on the network.

In short, I have personally used one in a mixed environment of different vendors network gear with devices running at 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps without an issue.   It is a straightforward easy to install device that you forget about once it is running.   It just works!
