Apple’s overall mobile platform lead is larger in Europe than it is in the US, comScore found Thursday. The total iOS platform, including iPads and iPods along with the iPhone, was 116 percent larger than Android at 28.87 million devices in the continent. Android reached 13.37 million devices and 5.7 percent.
Google has so far focused primarily on smartphones and only just began publicly addressing other categories with the launch of Android 3.0 for tablets. With the exception of France’s Archos, virtually none have made non-phone media players until the Samsung Galaxy Player arrived.
iPad user demographics varied sharply from the US. iPhone owners were noticeably more likely to have an iPad as they made up 27.2 percent of the tablet’s base despite having 20.6 percent phone share. Europe’s much friendlier attitude to Symbian also meant 26.4 percent of iPad owners had a Nokia phone, and Samsung phone owners of various platforms made up 15 percent of iPad owners. BlackBerry owners were 4.8 percent of the group.
Owners of Nokia and RIM phones were the only ones underrepresented on the iPad, comScore said, suggesting that the two either were less likely to be conscious of the iPad or were actively avoiding it. RIM users may have been waiting for the BlackBerry PlayBook’s European launch later in the year.
Age demographics were still largely the same and saw most users in the 25-34 year old age bracket, followed by 35-44 year olds.
