Hayley Atwell Addresses ABC’s Ending Of Agent Carter

The cancellation of Marvel’s Agent Carter remains a sore spot for some fans as both seasons of the series were one of the better small screen Marvel adaptations in recent years.

Axed after two seasons despite strong reviews, ABC didn’t want to let go of the show’s star and so slotted actress Hayley Atwell into the legal procedural Conviction which died a quick death.

Atwell has previously said she’s game for a revival should it happen, and both fans and Marvel have indicated a desire to proceed.  Speaking with AV Club, Atwell puts the blame squarely on ABC itself:

“It’s a shame the network cancelled it and wanted to put me in something more mainstream. You know, Marvel didn’t want it to end. There are lots of online campaigns to bring her back. Fans loved her.

I think it was just a network economical thing: ‘Let’s put Hayley Atwell in something more mainstream that’s less genre-specific and see if we can get higher ratings.’ And unfortunately, that isn’t, as an actor, anything I’ve got control over.

But maybe, in small ways, characters like Peggy Carter very slowly pave the way for it to be possible for other female-led narratives to exist.”

This fits with comments from Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb who said it was more to do with the network than Marvel that stopped the renewal. Whether the series could see a comeback on a platform more suitable, such as Disney’s upcoming streaming service is unclear.
