Google Killing Google Checkout – Migrating to Google Wallet

Posted by at 12:33 pm on May 21, 2013

Google made it known to its array of merchants that it is discontinuing the Google Checkout functionality, and migrating some existing users to Google Wallet. In a blog post announcing the move, Google called the Wallet product “a platform that enables merchants to meet the demands of a multi-screen world where consumers shop in-stores, at their desks and on their mobile devices.” Users have six months to find an alternative solution, if not migrated automatically.

Merchants can continue to accept payments with the Checkout service through November 20, 2013. Google has partnered with Braintree, Shopify, and Freshbooks to offer discounted migration options, if needed. Google Play developers, as well as Chrome Web Store and Offers Marketplace will continue to be supported, and will make the transition automatically.

Shoppers can continue to use Google Wallet to make purchases, and are generally unaffected by the move. Google has scheduled a webinar on May 23 at 10AM PST for businesses to learn more.
