Gemini Man Heads Home At 60 FPS – Closer To Ang Lee’s Vision

In what we think is a first for a major studio film’s home video release, Paramount Home Media Distribution have announced that Ang Lee’s Gemini Man is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with a 60 frames-per-second (FPS) frame rate as opposed to the regular 24 or 30 FPS.

Coming to Digital HD on December 23rd and then 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 14th, all the disc versions are packed with over an hour of fascinating bonus content, including an alternate opening, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes explorations of the film’s groundbreaking technology, interviews with the cast and crew, and more.

Only the 4K version has the 60FPS version, and that UHD also boasts Dolby Vision HDR and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack remixed specifically for home theaters. The film will also be the first-ever Dolby Vision high frame rate disc to be released.

The UHD will also include a visual effects featurette with a scene breakdown presented by WETA – all of which will be shown in 4K HDR at 60FPS.

This is great news for fans in the US, since no theater in America could  actually show the movie in the way Ang Lee shot it.  Lee shot the movie in 120 frames per second, which gives the movie an incredibly sharp and smooth look. The closest your could get to the needed hardware is 120 fps on a 2K projector in 3D, which is available at only 14 Dolby-equipped theaters in the states.  Head over to Polygon to see the list of those theaters.
