Geely/Volvo To Add Google Services To Sensus In Car Infotainment System

Geely/Volvo Cars says it will add voice controlled Google Assistant, Play Store, Maps and other services to its next generation of Sensus infotainment system which is based on the Android operating system.

This would further enhance the way “customers engage with and interact with their cars”, the automaker said in a statement.

Apps and services developed jointly are embedded in the car, plus thousands more are available through Play Store, optimised and adapted for Android-based infotainment. Running on an Android platform means new apps and software updates will be available in real time and can be applied automatically.

The cars can thus react to customer needs and offer up to date information and predictive services.

“Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services,” said Volvo R&D head Henrik Green.

Google Assistant provides a central voice interface for the car that allows drivers to control the likes of air conditioning and use apps to play music and send messages. Google Maps will provide refreshed navigation and traffic data in real time, keeping drivers informed about upcoming traffic situations and proactively suggesting alternative routes.

The strategic relationship between Volvo Cars and Google began in 2017 when the automaker said its next generation infotainment would be based on the Android platform. It’s due for launch in 2020.

“Volvo Cars is committed to developing strategic relationships with third parties to broaden the range of connected services offered to customers, embracing the disruption currently under way in the car industry,” the automaker said.

It also develops its own apps, software and connected services using its own software engineers.
