Garmin has added another two imaging devices to its Virb camera range. The Virb X and Virb XE are action cameras that are not only capable of shooting high-definition video in rugged environments, but can also monitor what is happening in the environment around it, overlaying various gauges and other extra information on top of the recorded video.

Both the Virb X and XE can survive immersion to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet) without any extra housing, with the hydrophobic glass lens eliminating droplets from forming when moving from below to above the water level. Its exposed microphone can capture audio underwater, though it can also accept sound from Bluetooth headsets and microphones, and though it has one-touch recording, it can also be remotely controlled using a mobile app on a smartphone or tablet over Wi-Fi.

The Virb X can capture 12-megapixel images at a burst of 10 frames per second, with video ranging between 1080p at 30fps and 480p at 120fps. The Virb XE boosts the burst mode to 30fps, can capture 1080p video at 60fps, 1440p at 30fps, and 480p at 240fps, with added gyro-enhanced image stabilization.

The onboard sensor collection allows the cameras to keep track of various statistics while filming, with its GPS, gyroscope, and accelerometer able to be supplemented by other compatible devices, like the Fenix 3 multisport watch, or Bluetooth-enabled OBD tools for alternative data sources, such as a vehicle’s RPM or throttle position. This can then be overlaid on top of the video in the mobile app or on a computer after the recording, giving viewers more detail about what’s going on in the shot.

The Virb X and Virb XE will be shipping this summer, priced at $300 and $400 respectively.
