FCC Will Make More 5GHz Spectrum Available for Wi-Fi

The Federal Communications Commission today took steps to make more spectrum available in the 5GHz band for high-speed Wi-Fi.

Specifically, the FCC is removing the indoor-only provision from the 5.15GHz to 5.25GHz band so device makers have more flexibility in using 802.11ac at higher power settings to support outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots. The FCC is also modifying existing rules that will require device makers to secure their devices against hacking and other modifications to prevent interference with existing services.

“The new rules will make 100MHz of spectrum more accessible for use in homes and congested spaces like convention centers, parks, and airports and increase the potential for more unlicensed spectrum innovation,” said the FCC.
