Coming Tuesday, Skype for iPhone

The free Skype application, which will be available for download from the App Store, will let users place phone calls o other Skype users on computers or supported mobile phones at no charge.   You use Skype  credit or plans to call standard phone numbers, just as you can on the client for the Mac or Windows.

Both the original iPhone and iPhone 3G will be supported out of the box.   The second-generation iPod touch will need access to a microphone accessory for full functionality since it does not include a built-in microphone.   Voice calls will only be supported when a user is connected to a wi-fi network, but text chat will be supported on EDVO or 3G networks.

Per the Associated Press, the Skype application will  have access to a user’s existing Address Book, so users will have no need to duplicate their contact lists.

But not all the features of the desktop client will be there;  SMS, setting up a conference calling group, purchasing SkypeOut credit directly, and file transfers will not be in the first version for the iPhone.

A Blackberry version of Skype will be coming soon as well.
