Digital imaging giant Canon has announced several new cameras at CES, spread across its PowerShot, ELPH, and VIXIA lines. The leading model is the $430 PowerShot SX530 HS, which has a 50x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-1200mm on a full-sized camera. The unit also has optical image stabilization and a 16-megapixel sensor, capable of 1080p video, plus a pop-up flash and high-speed autofocus. It also includes Wi-Fi and NFC support, which can be used to connect to a smartphone and various other devices.
The PowerShot SX710 HS and SX610 HS are similar, but have 30x and 18x lenses, helping to bring their respective costs down to $350 and $250. On the lower end of the scale are the PowerShot ELPH 170 IS and ELPH 160. These both have 20-megapixel sensors and 12x optical zoom sensors, but scale video down to 720p, and lack Wi-Fi or NFC; only the 170 IS has optical image stabilization. That camera costs $150, while the 160 is $120.
Each VIXIA video camera is equipped with 1080p resolution, a 57x optical zoom lens, and optical image stabilization. The $450 VIXIA HF R62 simply has a better battery than the $400 VIXIA R60; the VIXIA HFR600 has a still smaller battery, and unlike its siblings, no Wi-Fi or NFC.
Accompanying the cameras are two other products, the Pixma MX492 and the Connect Station CS100. The former is a a compact photo printer, capable of printing color images at about 4.4 photos per minute. It can connect to cameras or computers through Wi-Fi, and should ship soon for $100.
The CS100 meanwhile is a network hub for storing, transferring, and viewing photos and videos. It incorporates a 1TB hard drive, supports Wi-Fi and NFC, and can be controlled via a wireless remote. Apart from wireless options users can transfer files via USB, Ethernet, or slots for CF and SD cards. Images are displayed on a connected monitor or TV. It should ship in June for $299.
