Brightkite, the Social Discovery Network, today announced the public availability of its first BlackBerry application, myKite, in the BlackBerry App World. The BlackBerry application is the company’s first third-party developed handset application. With more than a dozen applications built on the Brightkite open API, the BlackBerry app joins an active developer community that has seen diverse uses including Google Latitude, Socialgreat, Friendfeed, Oscar Meyer and BFGoodrich Tires.

“It’s nearly impossible for us to build all the applications and features we want across all platforms, so we do all we can to support our community of developers,” said Jonathon Linner, Brighkite’s CEO. “It’s fantastic to see the work they are doing, and we look forward to seeing what new interfaces, integrations, features and ideas they will come up with next.”

BlackBerry application developer Chris Hallgren adds, “I’ve been an avid user of Brightkite for more than a year, and also a loyal BlackBerry user. I really wanted a native app for the BlackBerry, so I took a look at Brightkite’s API and before I knew it I had built an application.”

BlackBerry devices are among the most frequently used on the Brightkite mobile website, so a native application will give Brightkite’s two million active monthly users a richer BlackBerry experience.

The myKite BlackBerry app is a result of an open source Brightkite BlackBerry project started by Chris Hallgren.
