Big-Hero-6It’s been a decade since Kingdom Hearts II came out, and fans have been demanding a full sequel for years. On the final day of Disney’s D23 Expo, gamers discovered that the latest Disney property to join the wildly popular Square Enix series is Big Hero 6.

The Big Hero 6 announcement was made by Kingdom Hearts developer Shinji Hashimoto, alongside Larry Sparks and Kaori Takasue. A fully inflated Baymax also came on stage after Sparks showed off Kingdom Hearts III concept art of Sora riding Baymax and Sora fighting Dark Baymax. In a special video message, Big Hero 6 producer Roy Conli explained that the Big Hero 6 world would take place after the events of the movie and feature the entire team.

While technically based on the Marvel characters created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, Big Hero 6 was redeveloped into a standalone property by Disney’s animated division. The Big Hero 6 movie was released in 2014 and a sequel is rumored to be in the works. At the end of their D23 presentation, Hashimoto promised fans that “many more surprises” are coming for Kingdom Hearts III.

Thus far, only Big Hero 6 and Tangled have been confirmed as new worlds in Kingdom Hearts III. In the ten years since Kingdom Hearts II, Disney has purchased Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, all of which have a deep library of characters that could potentially be in Kingdom Hearts III. It’s certainly something that fans want to see, and the Disney Infinity video game franchise has already incorporated Disney’s expanded roster. However, Square Enix and Disney have not yet revealed their final plans for Kingdom Hearts III.
