Starting this June, the successful multiplayer component for first-person shooter Battlefield 3 is expanding.

Electronic Arts and studio DICE announced three downloadable expansions are in the works, starting with Battlefield 3: Close Quarters this summer.

Details of the game’s battle plan were revealed at an event during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The expansion will feature infantry-centered gameplay and tightly enclosed maps, similar to what players have seen with soldier-only Team Deathmatches.

Maps will include more verticality, as demonstrated in a brief video showcasing balconies and other structures. Players will also have 10 more weapons at their disposal. No details were given on the number of environments available.

Close Quarters is the first of three expansions revealed by DICE following the launch of last winter’s Back to Karkand. Another download called Armored Kill will focus heavily on large-scale warfare with huge maps and several new vehicles to choose from.

A fourth expansion called End Game will follow, although no details were provided by DICE. Also, no word on when the last two downloads will debut.

The first-person shooter has proven hugely successful for EA and DICE. Studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed the game has sold 12 million copies since its October launch.
