America’s former ‘Governator’ has quit the US reality show The Celebrity Apprentice.Film actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had signed onto the series to replace outgoing mentor Donald Trump. Schwarzenegger’s first outing with the series saw a softening in the ratings, a point which Trump, now America’s 45th President, gloated about on social media. In what is now perhaps the least unusual wrinkle in the strange tapestry of Trump’s presidency, he remains an executive producer of the series in addition to being the America’s Commander-in-Chief.

Schwarzenegger confirmed he would not return for another season of The Celebrity Apprentice, citing the show’s “baggage”.

“I loved every second of working with [US network] NBC and [producer] Mark Burnett,” Schwarzenegger said. “Everyone, from the celebrities to the crew to the marketing department, was a straight 10,” Schwarzenegger added. “I would absolutely work with all of them again on a show that doesn’t have this baggage.”

Some US trade publications suggested NBC would not likely proceed with another series of the show anyway, as Trump’s presence as a presidential “co-executive producer” opened up questions about his corporate relationship with the show and potential conflicts of interest.

In an interview with a US magazine, Schwarzenegger said Trump’s involvement in the show had tainted the brand.

“With Trump being involved in the show people have a bad taste and don’t want to participate as a spectator or as a sponsor or in any other way support the show,” he said.

“It’s a very divisive period now and I think this show got caught up in all that division.”

Trump used an early morning Twitter storm on Saturday – which also included accusing former president Barack Obama of wire tapping – to take a pot shot at Schwarzenegger. Despite the fact that Schwarzenegger is a Republican, and Trump a Republican president, the film actor-turned-politician has been a strident critic of Trump and his presidency.

The pair had a testy exchange on social media, with Trump saying “they hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out.”

Schwarzenegger fired back: “I have a great idea, why don’t we switch jobs?”

“You take over TV, because you’re such an expert in ratings, and I take over your job,” Schwarzenegger said. “And then people can finally sleep comfortably again.”

Schwarzenegger later jokingly said to a US media outlet that he wanted “smash his face into the table,” referring to Trump.

“I think I have to be above all that,” Schwarzenegger said. “Don’t get into a stinking contest with a skunk.”
