Symantec released NetBackup 7.6, the latest version of its enterprise level backup solution. In the announcement on Tuesday, Symantec mentioned some of the new features that mostly focus on enhancements that will be of interest to organizations running VMware’s virtual solutions.

Symantec’s State of Information Report states data is growing at a rate of 60 to 70% annually. With the increased use of virtualization, and larger, more complex virtual environments, standard backup and recovery solutions are no longer adequate.

In a disaster recovery scenario, getting data back into the production environment so users can go back to work is critical; what’s more, bottlenecks and delays can be a source of frustration for IT and users.

“A recent study from ESG (Enterprise Strategy Group) found that improving backup and recovery, increasing server virtualization, and managing data growth will remain some of the most important priorities for IT. In addition, ESG continues to see ‘tolerance to downtime’ shrinking, the sheer numbers of VMs per environment growing and the increasing use of snapshots in combination with (and managed by) backup systems to achieve the protection and recovery-agility that customers need,” says Jason Buffington, senior analyst for data protection at Enterprise Strategy Group. “ESG performed hands-on testing of NetBackup 7.6 for VMware to test Symantec’s ability to meet those customer demands – and found NetBackup to exceed expectations. This combination of NetBackup 7.6 and VMware appears ready to deliver the protect-ability that highly virtualized large enterprises are seeking.”

NetBackup is a single integrated appliance and point of control for backup, deduplication and recovery from a variety of media and storage sources such as tape, cloud, and virtual and physical storage.
