Users of the local network streaming movie and music service Plex will have more incentive to purchase an Apple TV, with an app for the latest model said to be in development. Days after the revelation that the latest generation of Apple TV will be able to run third-party apps, Plex co-founder Scott Olechowski confirmed developers are working on a version of its app that will be downloadable to the set-top box in the future.

Speaking to IT World, Olechowski advises

“It’s been a long requested platform and we’re excited to work on it. We want it, our users want it, and we’re anxiously awaiting the tvOS developer beta info so we can finally dig in.” The co-founder claims “the ability to access great and proven iOS frameworks on the device is great for developers like us – we know the stuff is solid and will perform really well,” before suggesting “there is no doubt this will be a top platform for us.”

Timing for a Plex release on the new Apple TV is unknown, with Olechowski believing it to be a bit early to say when it will ship. He did note that there are seemingly no restrictions on streaming local content within the app, suggesting it is unlikely to be held up by Apple’s App Store policies when it is submitted to the Apple TV’s own App Store.
