Opera Mini for Android Adds Video Boost

Opera today updated its Opera Mini browser for Android devices and added video compression to improve playback and reduce data usage.

Opera says the Video Boost tool should cut down buffering times and provide smoother performance on mobile devices when streaming video over cellular networks. The compression algorithms also cut down on the amount of data consumed by video over cellular.

Video Boost needs to be turned on manually in Opera Mini’s settings. The browser also now allows users to re-size images before uploading them to the web, and can turn data compression off automatically when it detects a WiFi connection.

Last, Opera Mini adds a thumbscroller feature to help users navigate through long web pages or articles.

Opera Mini is free to download from the Google Play Store.
