Back in October, it was revealed that the upcoming television adaptation of the hit slasher franchise “Scream” would forgo using the iconic “Ghostface.” Now, the brand new mask for MTV’s “Scream: The TV Series” has been revealed (via EW) and though it bares a slight similarity, it’s notably different from the classic killer’s facade.

“The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience,” executive producer Jaime Paglia tells the outlet.

Executive producer Jill Blotevogel added that the new design not only has its roots in the original Scream’s killer but other horror icons as well.

“It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask,” she says. “But it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask. It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage.”

Fans of the original films will be pleased to know however that the new mask has the stamp of approval from director Wes Craven as well.

“The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction,” the filmmaker, who helmed all four “Scream” movies, said. “It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.”

In “Scream: The TV Series,” everyone has secrets. Everyone tells lies. Everyone is fair game. What starts as a YouTube video going viral, soon leads to problems for the teenagers of Lakewood and serves as the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to the town’s troubled past.

The “Scream: The TV Series” stars Bex Taylor-Klaus, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Connor Weil and Amadeus Serafini.

The show’s premiere, set to air June 30 on MTV at 10 PM EST, features Bella Thorne in what’s apparently a recreation of the original film’s classic opening sequence. Jamie Travis (For a Good Time, Call…) directed the pilot.
