The Punisher is getting his own Netflix spinoff. Netflix announced the news Friday on Twitter, writing, “The Punisher is back. Locked and loaded.”

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as the titular vigilante — aka soldier Frank Castle — who was introduced in the current season of “Daredevil.” “Hannibal” executive producer Steve Lightfoot will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer.

“Marvel’s The Punisher” marks the sixth series in the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel, which includes Mike Colter’s upcoming “Luke Cage,” Finn Jones’ “Iron Fist” and the ensemble series “The Defenders.” It’s unknown yet whether The Punisher will be joining the Defenders team and when the show will debut.

“Daredevil” was the first show in the Marvel slate and was followed by “Jessica Jones” in November. “Daredevil” Season 2 premiered in March.

Netflix does not release audience ratings, but according to data unveiled by Variety last year, “Daredevil” is one of the streaming service’s most popular shows, with an estimated 10.7% of subscribers having watched at least one episode in its first 11 days on the site. Rumors of a “Punisher” series started swirling last summer following Bernthal’s “Daredevil” casting.
