MS Releases ‘We’re In’ for WP7 – Event Planner and Social Network

Microsoft today announced a new social location sharing application for Windows Phone 7 called called We’re In. Microsoft says that We’re In can be used to organize activities and/or events, and allow the participants to see exactly where everyone is. Rather than checking into locations, users send an invite to a select group (We’re In supports WP7 and non-WP7 handsets via mobile browsers).

The invite explains the plans (i.e., let’s meet at the mall), and then reveals the location of all the invitees who accept on Bing Maps. Invitations last for a defined period of time, and all the location data will vanish once the event ends. Participants can also “leave” to stop sharing their location before the event closes.

The app can be used by participants to post status messages and interact with one another as a group, rather than separately or through other social networks. The application is free for Windows Phone 7 devices and is compatible with the browser of select other platforms. Microsoft said it hopes to expand the application to other devices in the near future.
