Google Updates Google Play Newsstand App – Brings It to the Web

Google today announced a wholly refreshed version of Google Play Newsstand that reimagines the newsreader and expands its availability beyond smartphones and tablets.

To start, Google is relying on machine learning to make more personalized recommendations for readers. The launch screen now carries a better mix of major headlines, national news, local news, and personal interests. The app takes a big step forward with multimedia and now includes autoplay videos, podcast controls, and high-resolution imagery.

Google says it is taking advantage of its own AMP program to improve the speed of articles within the app. Users can always turn on the Data Saver mode to cut back on multimedia when using a metered connection. Last, Newsstand is now available on the web. Google says no matter which platform or device people use, all of their personalized content and sources are available at a whim.

Google plans to roll out these changes on Android, iOS, and the web over the next couple of days.
