George Lucas announced a live action “Star Wars” television show, to pick up the action in between the end of his second trilogy, “Revenge of the Sith” and the beginning of his first trilogy, “A New Hope.”

The production is in anything but light speed mode.

Appearing on G4’s “Attack of the Show,” Lucas revealed that, while he’s got two seasons worth of show shot, the final product won’t be ready for human eyes for quite some time. For all the light sabers and TIE fighters in his movies, the technology just isn’t there to convert it, on a budget, to 3D.

“It sits on the shelf. We have 50 hours and we’re just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies, a different technology that we can use, that will make it economically feasible to shoot the show,” he said. “Right now it looks like the ‘Star Wars’ features, but we have to figure out a way of making it for about a tenth the cost of features.”

Already, there is an animated “Star Wars” series, “The Clone Wars,” but this one will be a live action affair.

Lucas, appearing on the show with Disney Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald, also spoke about the conversion of his original films to 3D; he plans on re-releasing all of them to theaters with the enhanced screen experience.
