Gears of War 3 has broken records today as the fastest pre-ordered title in Xbox history, reports Major Nelson. Publisher Microsoft and developer Epic Games have announced that the third-person shooter has surpassed one million worldwide pre-orders, making it a milestone in pre-orders for the Xbox 360-exclusive title—and there’s still four months to go until its official release.”

Last Sundyamarked the end of open beta testing for Gears of War 3 to the public, which lasted from April 25th to May 15th. Access, however, was only given to those who either pre-ordered a copy or purchased a copy of the ‘Bulletstorm: Epic Edition’ game (April 18t – 24th beta access). Over the course of four weeks 1.29 million players gathered online to play over 11 million multiplayer matches—that’s 249 years worth of matches.

During this beta period there weren’t any more clues about the story mode, which only has one trailer, and the cliffhanger at the end of the sequel to leave us guessing. It seems Marcus Fenix and the rest of the human race are on their last leg against the Locust hordes that threaten to wipe out human existence.

Gears of War 3 is currently available for pre-order in several different flavors: Standard (you get the game), Limited Edition (the game in a cool box), and Epic Edition (the game in a cool box and swag). The game will be available on September 20 of this year.
