First Time in 4 Years, T-Mobile Grows Customer Base

T-Mobile has revealed it has increased its customer count for the first time in four years, after hemorrhaging customers in multiple successive quarters. A net increase of approximately 579,000 customers, 3,000 of which being branded customers, has been noted by the company, ahead of its first quarterly results as the newly re-branded “UnCarrier.”

The total customer base now stands at around 34 million for the quarter. Prepaid customers increased by 202,000, an improvement from the 166,000 increase last quarter and marks the seventh consecutive quarter of prepaid customer additions. Branded contract customers dropped by 199,000 in the quarter, but even so, this is still an improvement from the 515,000 lost in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Though the “UnCarrier” initiative was announced last month, it will not have had enough time to make an impact on customer numbers. The next quarter will show the effectiveness of T-Mobile’s new campaign, which will be helped by the addition of a number of phones to the company’s roster, including the BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, Samshing Galaxy S4, and the iPhone 5.
