Broadcom today announced a new system-on-a-chip it believes will be ideal for handsets costing less than $300.

The M320 platform features a dual-core processor and LTE baseband together on a single piece of silicon. The LTE radio is capable of 150Mbps Category 4 speeds on FDD-LTE and TD-LTE networks, as well as 42Mbps 3G HSPA+ and 2G. The SoC supports VoLTE and HD voice; high-definition displays; and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Smart, NFC, and location technologies.

The M320 was designed to support Android 4.4 KitKat. According to Broadcom, the dual-core M320 is already in production.

A quad-core version of the same chip, called the M340, is sampling and will reach volume production later this year.
