White House Want To Define 5G Spectrum Strategy

The White House has published a memorandum signed by President Donald Trump that looks to formalize the country’s development and support of 5G technologies, particularly as it applies to spectrum.

“Access to spectrum is a critical component of the technological capabilities that enable economic activity and protect national security,” wrote Trump. “Wireless communications and associated data applications establish a foundation for high‑wage jobs and national prosperity. To best achieve this policy, the Nation requires a balanced, forward-looking, flexible, and sustainable approach to spectrum management.”

The administration set several targets for reports that it expects to be submitted by the NTIA, FCC, and other organizations with details on how best to proceed.

The memorandum ignores progress the FCC and other bodies have already made in furthering 5G. For example, the FCC plans to auction off 5G spectrum as soon as next month, and it continues to refine policy regarding the use of the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands.

Trump’s memorandum effectively revokes similar memorandums put in place by former President Barack Obama in 2010 and 2013.
