Mind Console Productions has ported a version of a classic 1989 screensaver called Starry Night, part of the After Dark collection from Berkeley Systems. The new version is rather ironically ported from scratch based on a re-creation of it made for Windows systems. The original was first released for Mac before appearing on Windows, but no universal binary of the After Dark collection was ever made. The last official version for OS X was released in 2003.
The new version for Mac has a “retro colors” (eg grayscale) mode as well as color, and tries to recreate the city landscape as it was originally despite huge changes in resolution and screen size since the original’s introduction. For long-time Mac users, the screensaver may invoke a bygone era of early Macintosh’s, pre-OS X systems and even the now-obsolete need for screensavers.
The free program is only 148KB in size and requires an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5 or later. It is available via MacUpdate (no developer website available). Despite the similar name, the screensaver has nothing to do with the well-known painting by Vincent Van Gogh
