Amazon is reaching out to fans of the strange and supernatural by introducing its multi-part digital comic book, Blackburn Burrow, available today.

Set in Civil War America, where supernatural horrors roam in a small Appalachian town in northern Georgia, Blackburn first came to Amazon Studios as a feature film screenplay, but was instead given the cartoon treatment.

Produced by 12 Gauge Comics, Blackburn Burrow took shape with the help of writer Rom Marz and illustrator Matthew Dow Smith. It reads just like a traditional book, Amazon said, and is available for free through various sites, including digital comic provider Graphicly, as well as AmazonStudios.com, the Amazon Studios Facebook page, and the Kindle Store.

“This is a very exciting venture for Amazon Studios,” director Roy Price said in a statement. Beyond simply entertaining comic fans, Price said he finds value in the ability to test screenplays via digital comics, and learn more about fan engagement.

The story will roll out over a period of four months, with new issues releasing every four weeks. As with other movie series projects available through Amazon Studios, the public will have a chance to provide feedback as the story continues to unfold, and can participate in accompanying polls.

Readers can access the comic online, or via a Kindle e-reader or tablet. Blackburn Burrow is available now, and fans can look for volume two in October.
