Seagate Momentus XT Over the weekend, information surfaced that Seagate is ceasing production of 7200RPM 2.5-inch drives before the end of the year. Models affected by the move are the Momentus 7200.4, 7200.2, Momentus Thin 7200, and Momentus XT. The company cites the rise of SSDs as the reason for the production stop.

Mobile hard disk drives with 7200rpm spindle speed offer a bit higher performance compared to hard drives with 5400rpm, but are still dramatically slower than various solid-state hybrid drives or solid-state drives (SSDs).

Seagate doesn’t have a SSD product line at this time, so Seagate will positions solid-state hybrid for performance and capacity demanding end-users. To further stimulate customers to utilize SSHDs, the company will cease building hard drives with 7200rpm spindle-speed in 2.5” form-factor.
