Seagate has unveiled a version of itsĀ Backup Plus portable and desktop drives for the Mac. The new release includes USB 3.0 support, which did not exist on Macs until the MacBook Pro with Retina was put on the market, though it can be upgraded to use FireWire 800 or a Thunderbolt connection if required, via Seagate’s Universal Storage Module technology.

Just like the PC release, the Backup Plus for Mac will store content from social networks such as Facebook and Flickr as well as desktop files. The included Seagate Dashboard software manages the social network backup, while TimeMachine also continues to be compatible with the drive.

On sale now, the Seagate Backup Plus Portable for Mac costs $110 for the 500-gigabyte model and $130 for 1 terabyte. The Backup Plus Desktop version will retail at $130 for 2 terabytes, and $180 for 3 terabytes.
