The latest set of updates for the Pebble smartwatch include a number of major updates useful to Android users, with relatively few iOS improvements also included. The biggest changes in firmware 2.9 and the Android app relate to Android Wear, allowing the smartwatch to display notifications for apps that take advantage of Google’s operating system for wearable devices.

The new Android app can push the Android Wear and actionable notifications from a smartphone or tablet, such as updates from fitness apps or directions to a destination when traveling. The app also includes the ability to create a set of five user-defined replies to messaging and other apps, including SMS, so responses can be made directly from the watch. Support fr devices running Android 4.0 or later is also improved.

Other changes to the Android app include automatic app and watch face updates when the Pebble is idle, UTF-8 support in PebbleKit JS, and various bug-fixes and improvements, including some affecting Whatsapp.

On the iOS side, the Pebble app has received “no major changes.” Version 2.6.4 does include the typical bug fixes and stability improvements expected from a software update, but it also adds new JavaScript-based Pebble apps to the Pebble appstore.
