Google is rolling out an update to Google Photos for Android today that lets people free up on-device storage by deleting local files.
A new option in the settings menu called “Free Up Space” lets users set the app to automatically delete local photos that have been backed up to the cloud. The feature is opt-in, and asks for permission before deleting local photos.
The Google Photos app now supports deleting photos from memory cards, as well. Google is rolling out a complimentary change to the web-based version of Google Photos that lets people adjust the quality of stored photos after they’ve been backed up online.
Google Photos is free to download from the Google Play Store. Google offers “unlimited” storage for high-quality photos, or limited storage for full-resolution photos.
