Autodesk Releases AutoCAD 2011 for Mac

As promised in August, Autodesk has begun shipping the first new Mac version of AutoCAD to be released in over 18 years. The program carries over most features of the recent Windows editions, and uses similar interface tropes. Some notable differences include the ability to browse files through Cover Flow, or use multi-touch gestures on Apple controllers like the Magic Trackpad.

DWG files produced in the Mac software can be exchanged with Windows users, and vice versa. The suite also supports AutoCAD WS, an online workspace where editing and sharing can be accomplished via the web or the iPhone/iPad app. The Mac program normally costs a minimum of $3,975 in non-subscription download form; a free trial version is also available however, and two educational options are present. The first is free, but only for three years and with watermarked output. An unrestricted educational copy costs $395.
