YouTube Update for Android Makes it Stand-Alone App

Google has mimicked a move it did for Gmail on Android by making its YouTube app for Android a standalone which is now available for download from the Android Market. The change allows Google to make updates to the apps and functionalities without having to wait for Android updates to be released by providers. It currently requires Android 2.2 or later.

The new app brings in-page playback, so users can continue to read comments while watching videos. Rotating the display to a landscape orientation makes the video full sized.    It’s also now possible to shoot videos and upload them directly to YouTube from the app instead of going to the dedicated camera tools. The app also now gives logged in users a recommended list of videos that in the past was reserved for the website.
