Warner Bros. Pictures has won a bidding war over several other studios for the rights to the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning stage musical In the Heights.
Set in Washington Heights in New York City, the story focuses on a bodega owner who’s closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother’s fortune.
The project had been set up at the Weinstein Company in 2016 but in the wake of that company’s collapse, the rights were then up for sale. Jon Chu is slated to direct from a script by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Miranda, Anthony Bregman, Mara Jacobs, and Scott Sanders are producing.
