The recently launched Netflix for Android app received an free update Thursday that has already significantly grown its phone base beyond the original. Officially meant to support both the LG Revolution and the original Motorola Droid, it’s now known to also work on the Droid X using Android 2.3, the Droid X2, and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. The support for Motorola devices now prove it works beyond just the Qualcomm Snapdragon chips Netflix promised at first.
Some devices are known not to work, at least under certain configurations. The Motorola Xoom currently doesn’t work. Despite its use of a Snapdragon chip, the HTC Thunderbolt won’t work using its stock Android 2.2.
Netflix has had to limit which devices can use the app in the early stages due to the splintered nature of copy protection on pre-3.0 versions of Android. Protection on Android often needs to be written with specific processors in mind and prevents the easy integration that let Netflix bring its apps to the iPad and iPhone first.
