Until Developers Max Out The PS3, No PS4

A common question these days involves the next generation, and when Sony and Microsoft will bring new consoles to the market.

Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer that the company will “seriously consider” launching the PS4 when developers can’t make increasingly better games with the PS3. Then, and only then, will Sony look into the next PlayStation. And for now, most developers agree that a new machine isn’t immediately necessary, although many designers have expressed a desire to see more capability from a new console. But they’re in the minority.

Yoshida says this just isn’t the time.

“Gamers always need something new and more exciting. If they’re seeing just similar types of games coming year after year, they will quickly lose their interest. Looking like that, when you see games coming out on PS3, both the traditional type of games as well as new kind of games using PS Move, there is a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint.

So as long as we and our developers can create new experiences that are more exciting to consumers, I see no need to transition into newer generation.”
